The priests

Afek is containing the remains of the biblical city of Aphek (or Afek Sharon), and the city Antipatris Roman and Byzantine periods. Mound is located near the sources of the Yarkon River, east of Petah Tikva and west to Rosh Ein, and in the Yarkon National Park.

In 20 BC King Herod built on the remains of a large cityAfek community that won for Antipatris the name of the father of Herod, the Edomite Antiftr. Antipatris was an important and prosperous city throughout the Roman period (63 BC - 324 AD), but the early Byzantine period (324 -638 AD) the city was destroyed a huge earthquake and restored only partially on top of the mound only.

After the Arab conquest in 638 CE built here Umayyad caliphs royal castle.
During the Crusader period (1099-1260 AD) built a new castle destroyed by the Mamluk Conquest. In 1571 was built by orders of the Sultan Selim the 2nd new castle whose ruins can be seen on the mound today. Afek are now in the Yarkon National Park managed by the Israel Nature and National Parks. Near Tel Afek distance of about 1km to the south east The Tower of Afek.
