The Green County Barn Quilts project started in 2008, and by the
end of 2010 the 100th barn quilt was installed. Barn quilts are
painted wooden squares (designed like one block of a real quilt
pattern), generally 8 x 8 feet in size. Some are located on
"working" barns, and others are displayed on "retired" barns. It's
not as challenging as geocaching, but hunting for the barn quilt
locations is a true adventure in experiencing the roads less
traveled of the Green County countryside.
The property has been in the family since 1980 and the abstract
states that the land was purchased in December of 1854. The barn is
a hay and dairy bank style barn with gable roof and fieldstone
walls. The support beams for the upper floor are still covered in
bark. In order to help preserve the barn and help prevent further
leaning, it has been cabled together and given support with
concrete abutments. Currently, the barn has a basketball court
upstairs, and cats living downstairs. This Barn Quilt is called
Comets.
