Considerada la iglesia más antigua de San
Fernando, fue iniciada en 1733 bajo la dirección de Juan de San
Román y terminada en 1740. Como lugar de culto, alberga en su
interior la imagen de la Virgen del Carmen, Patrona de
la ciudad y de la Marina.
A finales de 1813, y como consecuencia del
estado sanitario que padecía la ciudad de Cádiz, asolada por una
epidemia de fiebre amarilla, se decidió trasladar Las
Cortes a la Isla de León, eligiendo este edificio como sede.
Así durante unos meses la Iglesia se convirtió en el lugar de
reunión, reuniones que solamente tenían lugar por las noches "para
no interrumpir el culto divino diario". Aquí permanecieron
hasta el 29 de Noviembre de 1813, cuando se procedió al traslado de
estas Cortes a Madrid.
Días antes, las Cortes habían acordado conceder
a la Villa el título de ciudad, con la denominación de San
Fernando, y sería en esta misma Iglesia donde tuvo lugar tan
solemne acto.
Considered the oldest church in San Fernando,

Islade León" choosingthe churh as a headquarter.So for a few months the church became
the meeting
place,
meetings were held only at night, "not to interrupt the
the people that were attending the mass
daily."
Herethey
remained until November 29th,
1813, when
the these courts were transfered to Madrid.
Days
earlier, the courts had agreed to grant the town the title of city with
the name of
San Fernando, and it would be in the same church where
a
solemn ceremony took place.
