A rural walk in a series comprising 15 caches of various sizes, but mostly micros. This caching-walk, which follows, in part, the route of the Amber Valley Walks series No: 9 is longer and takes in more footpaths and countryside. This series also “encounters” the There and Back” series plus 2 to 3 other caches – depending on your time and fitness – a further 11 in all, potentially…an excellent day out!!.

This series of 15 caches is purposefully designed to lure people into the countryside on the outskirts of Derby. Parking should not prove difficult but please be thoughtful and considerate, and note that at Church-times parking will be potentially much more restricted.
The walk is substantial & for active folk, but is just less than 8 miles. It is footpaths with only a couple of very short tarmac sections. Tarmac sections are lanes so caution is advised, with children and animals – especially when exiting from fields, in either direction, onto Longlane (in the village of Longlane) where traffic there moves that bit faster potentially: you only have to carefully cross this, via stiles from field to field.
The path requires a proper map & good footwear as it can be rutted, ploughed, muddy, wet or firm depending upon Season and planting of crops. There may also be livestock: horses, sheep, & cows. Stiles may be excellent or broken, clear or overgrown (beware Hawthorn/brambles etc) but it is all passable and worth the effort. Narrow wooden bridges navigate water-ways & ditches and are single file. There are ups and downs plus a couple of more challenging gradients: especially depending your choice of clock-wise or counter.
There are public houses, for refreshment, on the route: one in Lees: and another in the village of Longlane. This requires a 250 yd detour off the caching path.

In undertaking the series you are advised to wear protection on your hands for some caches (thorns etc. for rummaging purposes) and perhaps your legs, also, in one or two places. I have, however, tried to avoid thorny hedgerows.
Please, please, please try really hard to relocate the tops on the caches – they require tenacity and a firm press – but this will make all the difference to the condition of the log and to the longevity of the cache, from a maintenance and enjoyment perspective. Please also cover well, if possible – thanks!
If I have not convinced you already, I regret this series is not suitable for people with mobility disadvantages or the very young. It is a lovely walk and will stretch you just a bit and provide a full day’s occupation especially if you manage to locate all of the other caches nearby.
You are looking for a home made "natural cache" here that blends in well, so I have up-rated the difficulty level until people say otherwise. contains room for a Log only (sorry)
This one could also be done from the road in a cache and dash: but parking would need careful consideration. A whole new fancy gate has been provided at the edge of the field which has sightly moved the path in relation to the OS map, so walk on down the road a little to the corner of the filed/boundary and you will see where it is you have to go. In summer you will have to watch for stingers and also duck low down. In Winter, as it is today 29th March 2013 with snow on the ground(!) you may have to step over a small "new" stream...that was not present when the first version of this cache was placed. NOTE: Latest placement (or relocation) in Sept 2013, necessitates less ducking, watch for stingers and also the currently dry ditch.
