Lieutnent Frederick
William Bell VC
DOB: 3 April 1875
Place Of Birth: Perth, WA
Frederick Bell, 6th Western Australian
Mounted Infantry, was a Perth-born volunteer in the first Western
Australian contingent of troops sent to South Africa. He took part
in some of the early battles. He came home in February 1901, but
soon left again as an officer in the sixth contingent. While
rescuing a dismounted man during fighting at Brakpan, Transvaal,
South Africa, his own horse fell under the combined weight of the
two men. Giving his mount to the other rider, he provided covering
fire to allow him to escape.Bell later lived in parts of Africa,
served in the British army in the First World War, and eventually
retired to Britain, where he died.
The Victoria
Cross
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for
acts of bravery in wartime. It was instituted in 1856 by Queen
Victoria and made retrospective to 1854 to cover the period of the
Crimean War. It is possible for any serving member of the armed
forces to obtain this award. The Victoria Cross is designed in the
form of the Maltese Cross: in the centre of the medal is a lion
guardant standing upon the Royal Crown. The words "For valour" are
inscribed below. The Victoria Cross is suspended from a crimson
ribbon. On the reverse of the cross the date of the act of bravery
is inscribed, along with the name, rank, and unit of the
recipient
