Do not enter Tunnel #2. It has an unstable roof and is very dangerous.
Built in 1902 to punch through Cheat Mountain, Tunnel #2 is one of two tunnels on the Coal & Iron Railway's line between Elkins and Durbin. From 1905 until its abandonment in 1984, this line was operated by the Western Maryland Railway as part of the Durbin Subdivision.
Following removal of the rails in the 1980s, the U.S. Forest Service acquired the former railbed between Durbin and Cheat Junction for the West Fork Rail-Trail. While the 22-mile section between Glady and Durbin continues as part of the trail today, the section between Glady and Cheat Junction was abandoned in the 1990s due to unsafe conditions in Tunnel #2.

Parking note: Access this cache by hiking in along the old railroad right-of-way, which is owned by Monongahela National Forest. There is a large gravel lot where the rail-trail meets CR 27. You can drive a short distance closer to the cache along the old railroad grade, parking at the barricade.
