Saltsjöbadens Giant Kettle
De bildades dels under istiden, (glacifluviala), där isen stod under en lång tid stilla i samband med avsmältningen, dessa är ofta belägna på bergshöjder.
Men de förekommer även i floder, nuvarande och fd floder, (flodgrytor), oftast i samband med forsar och fall, där stenarna som fastnar i flodbotten sätts i rotation, dessa finns oftast på lite lägre höjder. Även vid stränder, nutida och forntida,(strandgrytor), förekommer det grytor, då vågor eroderade berggrunden med hjälp av virvlar och rotation av klappersten.
Dessa är oftast ovala och grundare än de två andra. Dessa slipstenar måste vara hårdare än den berggrund som fanns runt omkring.
Grytor bildas fortfarande, nu oftast i floder. Det finns ett par smågrytor i närheten av Trollhättan som bildades under en period av ca 10 år. En i Stockholm känd gryta ligger i källaren till Tingshuset vid Haga Norra, och kan ses genom ett fönster.
Folktron säger att dessa gropar hade bildats av jättar som använde dem till att laga mat i. Det förekommer även att man hittar mynt i grytorna då man trodde att det betydde lycka att offra mynt till jättarna.

Giant Kettles are a mountain stew, oval or round, with mostly smooth polished walls. They were created by flowing water with a large stone with gravel and small stones to rotate around in a vortex.
They formed partly during the Ice Age, (Glacifluviala), where the ice was for a long time still in the melting,. these are often located on mountain heights.
But they also occur in rivers, current and former rivers (River kettles), usually in conjunction with rapids and waterfalls, where the stones that get stuck in the riverbottom in rotation, these are usually a bit lower elevations.
Even at the beaches, recent and ancient, (Beach kettles), there are pots, when waves eroded the bedrock by swirling and rotating the shingle. These are usually oval and shallower than the other two.
These grinding stones must be harder than the rock that was around.
Pots are formed still, now mostly in rivers. There are a couple minor kettles near Trollhättan, which was formed during a period of about 10 years.
A famous giant kettle in Stockholm is located in the basement of the courthouse at Haga Norra, and can be seen through a window. Folklore says that these kettles had been formed by the giants who used them for cookin. You can also find coins in the kettles thought it was lucky to sacrifice coins to the Giants.
