Both otters and
alligators can often be seen here! This location is extremely
important to the history of Highlands Hammock. It is the ONLY place
in the park where Roebling construction (the granite stone work)
meets construction done by the CCC (the limestone work). About
100ft South (in the middle of Hammock Road), there is a survey
marker. Everything East and North of that marker was the portion of
the park that Mr. Roebling originally donated to the state of
Florida to be made into the VERY FIRST Florida State Park. The
governor of Florida signed a bill accepting the donation in 1935
officially making this site THE FIRST state park in Florida even
though the Florida State Park Service was not officially created
until 1936.
