A quick cache very close to the N4 (Schoemanskloof) at a lovely shady spot by the Crocodile River.
Enjoy the amazing trees along the riverbank here, the cool shade, and the fast-flowing water. This stretch of river is prime yellowfish water, and the SA record of 5.75 Kg for largescale yellowfish was caught a few kms downstream of here by a good friend of mine about 30 years ago.
There are 5 species of yellowfish in SA, being the largemouth and smallmouth which are found only in west flowing rivers (Vaal & Orange river systems), the Natal Scaly which is found only in KZN, and the largescale and smallscale yellowfish which are found only in east flowing rivers (Crocodile, Komati, Olifants & Limpopo systems), the largescale at lower altitudes, and the smallscale at higher altitudes.
When the water's not too discoloured, this is a superb location to spot yellowfish in the rapids which is where they live and feed. Look in the most turbulent water for a bright flash of yellow as the fish turn on their sides. The flash is very quick, but it'll show you what to look for, and you'll start seeing more and more once you know what to look for.... and they can be very big fish!!
Be careful here, especially after dark and in poor light conditions - there are many hippos along this stretch of river and they are very dangerous. There are also a few crocodiles left in the river, but they shouldn't be a problem if you stay out of the water.
Lindy made the cache, and we hope you enjoy her handiwork!!
