Welcome to Vista
Point!
This particular spot is currently the southern end of the newest
Bay Area Ridge Trail
segment. Dedicated on October 22nd, 2011, the new segment is about
five miles long and will soon provide a large chunk of the
connection between Alum Rock Park to the north and Joseph D. Grant
County Park to the south. If you look south-southeast towards Mount
Hamilton (look for the white dots on the farthest ridge), the
outcrop between you and Hamilton is Antler Point, the highest point
in Grant Park.
Currently, the only legal access to this cache is by taking the
Todd Quick and Boccardo trails up out of Alum Rock Park
($6 for day-use, open 8am to a half-hour after sunset, closed
Mondays) to Sierra Vista
Open Space Preserve, and following the marked Ridge Trail
around to the east and south, a round-trip distance of
approximately twelve miles. Under no circumstances should you
consider using the marked private Alum Rock Road out of Alum
Rock Park to shortcut the climb up to and then down from Boccardo
Hill before the steep climb up to Vista Point on the new trail. The
City of San Jose and the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority
are working together to plan a staging area on Sierra Vista Road
(near Boccardo Hill), but that's still likely a few years out.
The cache is a medium-sized lock-n-lock. Please replace it how
you found it.
