The Beacon East Cinemas, 2002

The Beacon East Cinemas were built in 1968 in a retail area fairly close to the Eastland Mall.  It was built as a "twin" or two-screen theater and was known as the "Beacon East 1&2".  It was owned and managed by the Northeast Theater Corp.

In 1974, the Beacon East 1&2 was purchased by National Amusements and would be soon transformed to a more purchased the theater and soon would make some physical interior changes to the location.

In 1975, the theater's large auditorium was split in half, making it a 3-auditorium house, and later they would add a fourth screen as well within the building.

The interior of the theaters were fairly typical for the time.  This was built much later than the "elegant" designed theaters of the 1920's through the 1940's and 1950's had been.  It was built more for function as a theater than the design of the building being one of the main focal points.

The staff was usually friendly and efficient and even the manager was usually out greeting the customers too and the building and interior were very well-kept and in working order.

There had been some problems here, at times, but nothing that would keep folks away, and the experiences were nice for such a small venue.

The economy changed, and the entertainment needs of the public would move towards more home-based things, as well as other even-newer theaters being built with things such as "stadium seating" and various other amenities.  The decision was made to close the theater and sell the property.

The Beacon East Cinemas closed permanently at end of business Monday, September 4, 2006.

The building is now home to one of the local sources for Higher Learning on a College Level.
