Geocache Description:

It started out as a tupperware container, then an Altoids tin, and finally a Christmas cookie tin. None survived the winds. The cache is now an ammo can that's wedged in a knobby hole in the hillside. We brought a 40 pound sledge hammer on our last trip here (Geez, what we do for geocaching...) and drove two four-foot pipes into the ground, and then attached the ammo can to the stakes with chain. It should now survive hurricane winds.

It took two Jalamaburgers and an Anchor Steam to regain our strength.

The cache is about 3/4 mile north of the Jalama campground and about a 20 minute stroll. Going at low tide is your best bet. It's a short way up a narrow slot canyon to the cache. The path up the canyon may be blocked by tumbleweeds that you'll need to toss aside; the trail is a little unstable in spots, so you might want to wear a sturdy pair of sandals.

The first time we hiked up this canyon, in 2007, we surprised a Short-Eared Owl part way up. (It surprised us as well.) We didn't see it on subsequent visits, but we can always tell where it had perched.

Caution: The path eventually leads to the flats above -- and the railroad tracks. If you venture up, you'll be close to working railroad tracks. Also be aware that the bluff area is private property.

Zip took a short video (using very old technology) of his first walk down from the top in 2007. Popcorn and Zippy had a ball. We haven't been to the top since then, so head all the way up at your own risk.
