Geocache Description:

This cache is a short walk from the parking lot on Central Ave. (see additional waypoint) There may be a bit of mud involved in the last bit of your trek.

Greystone, formorly known as "The New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum," is now known as "Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital."

Greystone has been an interesting story since the late 1800's when it was originally built. Beautiful stone buildings on a majestic property... overcrowded wards where unthinkable things were done to people to "cure" them... abandoned buildings left to rot for years... Today, things are much different. The hospital itself has been moved to the back of the property where an entirely new hospital building was completed in 2008. Much of the rest of the hospital's campus is now owned by the Morris County Park Commission, and is now known as "Central Park of Morris County" making it a fabulous place to hide a geocache!

The cache is hidden on the south side of the campus near where an old stone arch bridge crosses a stream. During your exploration of this area, make sure you walk a short distance upstream from the bridge. There is an old dam which used to hold up a small pond. I'm fairly certain the pond was part of "The Park" which can be viewed on this photograph from 1899. (visit link)

Notice the lay of the land and the location of the smaller bridge in the distance, which must have been later replaced by the stone arch bridge. During your walk, make sure to notice how the bottom of the stream between the dam and the bridge is lined with stone.
