Geocache Description:

A camo'd pill container conveniently located a little over 600 ft. from the final stages of Geodalf's THE LAST HANGING (GCZ26DGJ). While in the area, make sure you have read his unique history of that cache.

In continuing with the series of New Mexico "Spirit" cemetery caches, this Estancia Cemetery serves the Estancia Valley. This valley was the home of several large cattle and sheep ranches in the 1800s.

Estancia means "large estate, station, cattle ranch or resting place". A spring on Don Fernando Otero's ranch plus the multiple salt lakes east of Estancia were the drawing cards for many trails, resting places and cattle drives. The famous and historic Salt Mission Trail and the main road from Chihuahua to Santa Fe passed through here.

Around 1901, the New Mexico Central Railway established its route through Estancia. The Estancia Post Office has been in operation since it opened in 1903.

One needs to have a historical perspective about cemeteries and their place in our culture. These "Spirit" caches are placed in hopes of paying respect to the pioneer ancestors having 'gone' on before us, and, possibly picking up a bit of history of the area.

We solicit your support as a volunteer cacher to place a "Spirit" cache at a cemetery near you.
