A nice walk along the paved ADA Accessible James A. Gaston Nature Trail at Bull Shoals State Park. Note that the official name to be given this trail is the Heritage and Habitat Trail
The name Bull Shoals, according to one story, came from the roaring sound the River made as it flowed through the shoals where the dam now stands. Heavy rains would run swiftly through the shallow, rocky areas (shoals) causing the water to "roar like a bull".
NOTE: Open hours are 8AM to 5PM (later hours in the summer). Gate closed after that time.
This trail is a wonderful addition to Bull Shoals State Park, and compliments the 6 year old James A. Gaston Visitor Center. Walk on a paved, mostly level trail through the woods, and stop at a bench or picnic table to observe the wildlife and nature as you search for this cache.
James A. Gaston was appointed to the State Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission in January 1973. He was appointed Commissioner Emeritus in January 1997. The Visitor Center (dedicated 10-19-06) was named for Jim Gaston's 33 years of dedication to, and support of, Bull Shoals-White River State Park and all Arkansas State Parks.

JAG is also the name our little Boston terrier, who we adopted from a former Bull Shoals State Park Interpreter. He was an unofficial mascot at the Visitor Center when it opened in 2006.
