Red-tailed hawks are North America's most common hawk. The most distinctive characteristic of a red-tailed hawk is its rust or brick-red hued tail above light band. Red-tailed hawks are birds of prey, eating primarily mice, ground squirrels, rabbits, other small birds, and reptiles. These hawks prefer open areas such as fields or deserts, with high perching places nearby from which they hunt, making Red Rocks park an ideal habitat. Red-tailed hawks are often seen flying in large circles, gaining height by gliding on thermal updrafts. Red-tailed hawks are monogamous and may mate for life; they make stick nests high above the ground, in which the female lays one to five eggs each year. Both sexes can live over twenty years in the wild and have wingspans of 38 to 43 inches (1.1 to 1.3 m).
