Front of the Roseville Theatre (1940's)

The Roseville Theater opened in 1927 in what was (and still is) known as "downtown Roseville" and In its prime, the theater drew thousands of people daily to the corner of Utica and Gratiot.  But as multiscreen mega-plexes emerged, the one-screen theater struggled.  The owner of the building was not the manager or operator of the theater, and after many years and declining attendance, the cinema closed in 1996, resulting in a rash of notes and mail from residents, blaming the owner for the shutdown and asking him to reopen this small, neighborhood film-house.

In the early 2000's, the theater was remodeled and upgraded and had fewer seats.
Workers leveled the slanted floors, installed new lighting, improved wheelchair accessibility and built new bathrooms and a concessions area.  But the biggest changes came with a new projection system.  Though the theater still had a 35mm film projector, many independent filmmakers could not afford the cost necessary to transfer a movie onto that kind of film.

There was upgrades done at the time to allow projections of movies from a variety of sources including videotapes, DVDs and Internet servers. A lot of independent filmmakers are doing digital releases and allowed for various shows to be presented at the Roseville Theater.  It also allowed for low-budget filmmakers to have their productions shown for the public to see.

The theater has also been a dance-club on weekend nights, being able to accomodate receptions and gatherings and even business presentations.  The Roseville Theater has been a community hub for Generations and many folks would miss the landmark if it were to suddenly disappear.
