The Crumlin Arm of the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal runs for 16km from Cwmcarn to Newport. It opened in 1796 and was worked until the 1940s. It is no longer navigable but can be walked or cycled along. If you're lucky, you may see a kingfisher.
The cache is a small clip lock box hidden beside a little used lane. There is no need to enter the nearby field.
