Centurion is the world's tallest hardwood tree and the world's tallest flowering plant at over 100 metres tall.
NAME:
The Centurion (a Roman officer in charge of 100 soldiers)
HEIGHT:
... 100–101 metres
(although it may be taller because the sight to the very top of the tree is partially obscured by the tree’s healthy crown).
AGE:
Age was assessed to be some 400 years
DIAMETER:
405 cm
SPECIES:
Eucalyptus regnans
(aka Swamp Gum, Mountain Ash, Tasmanian Oak, etc)
HISTORY:
Forestry Tasmania staff detecetd Centurion using an airborne Light Detection and Ranging Laser scanning technology (LiDAR)in August 2008.
They were amazed, especially knowing that LiDAR tends to underestimate tree heights because of pointy tops, tree lean, and dense undergrowth.
Scarcely containing their excitement, they raced to check their giant from the ground.
Using special ground-based laser survey equipment, they got clear sightings to just below the top of the tree, confirming its height at over 100 metres.
Centurion survived the major bushfire events of 1934 and 1966/67, which burnt to the west and immediately east of it respectively. The tree is now afforded protection through Forestry Tasmania’s Giant Trees Policy.
CACHE: Access is via She Oak Road (Named Edwards Link on the sign). Coords are provided for the next turn into Edwards Road and Parking coords are provided at the end of Edwards Spur 5. The walk is marked with white and yellow tape. A turn uphill needs to be made a few 100 metres in and from there its a farily easy 15 min walk uphill to the first of the BIG trees. Centurion is only a one to two minute walk from the first tree and is marked with pink tape.
The cache is a small sistema placed at the base of the tree and an unactivated geocoin is a gift for the first to find cacher.
As sirius Tas would say .. ENJOY!
