Geocache Description:

This Cache commemorates the phenomenon that became known as 'The moving statue'. This occurred in July 1985 when some teenagers stopped at the Marian Grotto and claimed to have witnessed the statue of the Virgin Mary moving. For a period the village of Ballinspittle became the centre of both religious pilgrimage and media attention. There is ample parking at the shrine.

The Marian Grotto outside Ballinspittle was built in 1954 in the Marian year. There are many such grottos and shrines around Ireland. In the summer of 1985 claims were made about the statue moving and levitating. The media was sceptical about this but the shrine attracted thousands who came to witness the phenomenon. As a result of these crowds to County Council widened the road and purchased land to accommodate the crowds. The Church authorities remained silent on the issue and over time the crowds moved away. Despite this, as you sit and enjoy the view after collecting this cache you will notice a steady stream of people who still come to say their prayers. This tells you something about the mysticism and superstition that surrounds these places of devotion. This continues a long tradition that dates back to pre-Christian times and can be seen in the 'holy wells' around Ireland.
