Geocache Description:

Cache is a camoed pill bottle. You can hike in from TCH or from Tryon Nature trail direction. A duck in from field headland would be easiet.

You could certainly use canoe/kayak and get fairly close to most of these caches that way then a short jaunt across a bit of the salt marsh to nab the cache. BEWARE of hidden holes in marsh structure and please follow existing animal trails both to cache and back to your canoe. The marsh is a fragile ecosystem . Do NOT walk upstream to these caches by walking exclusively IN the marsh itself..you WILL damage it and there are a LOT of hidden holes to fall into. You can walk along the edge of the marsh during any season and this may be the best option. Please try to follow existing animal trails. In PEI you can NOT own salt marsh nor tidal land (and this is both) so it's all public. It may be very sloppy going in places and knee waders at least are recommended. Third option is to go along base of farm fields just up from marsh then duck down to marsh edge for caches. This IS private land but cache owner and farm owner are friendly and as long as you stay OFF the actual crops, there shouldn't be any problems. In winter, of course, you could walk/snowshoe across those fields without any objection. It is NOT a good idea to try to go downstream to these from Lord's Pond.. because you'll discover you are on wrong side of river as this is East branch. The return trip for all four caches ( incl letterbox ) is 3-5 kms. ( depending on route used.). best starting point is either in cache owners yard ( yes you have my permission to park there.) . 16 Tobin rd. then take trail access just behind my house OR small public access road just off TCH JUST before Tobin rd. It's not much of an access road but it IS public as it is common access for Tryon River Watershed Trail, PEI Nature Trust land and farmland slightly to NW. You can park on grass about 50 m's in and you can't miss the 2 ( upper and lower trail access points there. Lower trail will take you to about .15 Mi. from cache # 1 and you have then to decide how to approach ( marsh edge/field bottom etc) from there. [NB there's several caches along this trail area too]. Canoe launch could be from ' Bito' ' Bridge about 1/2 mile downstream or from spring fed streamlet at bottom of cache owners land. It's a very meandering stream.

The Tryon River estuary is one of the best developed PEI estuaries in the sense of having all the elements with tidal flats, upstream salt marsh transitioning gradually to fresh water marsh as you go upstream. All caches in this group are adjacent to tidal part of river. Depending on season you can expect to encounter quite a variety of flora and fauna as you make your way along the marsh edge. Cattail, black grass, seaside goldenrod and saltmeadow cordgrass will dominate the actual marsh edge you may travel along. Farthur out you can see saltwater cordgrass, sea milkwort, glasswort, Common reed ( which is NOT common on PEI and is thought to be an import into area by Acadians.. it's the really really tall stuff found mid- marsh. Out in the mainstream there is eel grass and sea lettuce as well.; many other typical halophye plants can be found scattered throughout marsh. Fauna include huge herons, osprey, bald eagles, red-wing blackbirds, red fox, muskrat, raccoons, skunk, mink, , ferrets and seasonally, huge numbers of migrating waterfowl.. Canada Geese, Teal and Black ducks, mergansers, loons and cormorants. There is trout, gaspereaux, and smelts among other fish in river channel as well. . the estuary is a very important fish larval development zone as well. Oyster and clams are found farthur downstream ( below bridge) . And seasonally of course might just notice the odd mosquito (yup) .
So enjoy the journey, RESPECT the ecosystem and good luck !

P.S. No recommendation for kids depends on age/ degree of responsibilty. Older ( say well-behave 10 + ) should be fine. Dangerous is checked and applicable ONLY if you venture into actual marsh. One other thing . It is possible that there might be remnant barbed wire near or in marsh edge near field boundaries. watch your step!
