Geocache Description:

Welcome to Broad Bay

A straight forward cache hidden at ground level that should not pose any problems.

Broad Bay is located on the Otago Harbour coast of Otago Peninsula, in the South Island of New Zealand.

Broad Bay is 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) to the east of the city centre of Dunedin, but due to the shape of the peninsula's coastline, the heart of the city cannot be seen from Broad Bay. A large bluff, Grassy Point, lies between Broad Bay and the harbourside settlements of Company Bay and Macandrew Bay to the west. The bluff is skirted by Portobello Road, the road which winds around the southeastern shore of the harbour between inner Dunedin and Portobello, 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the northeast of Broad Bay. The Camp Road walking track connects Broad Bay with Larnach Castle, close to the ridge of the peninsula.

Broad Bay is situated on the shore of an aptly named wide bay (Broad Bay) and a smaller bay to the north east (Turnbulls Bay); between these lie a short peninsula (on which is sited the settlement's small historic cemetery), which terminates in the steep, finger-like headland of Yellowhead. The distinctive peak of Harbour Cone forms a backdrop to the settlement as seen from the harbour.

Broad Bay is home to the heritage listed Fletcher House, constructed in 1909 and restored in 1992, the first house of Fletcher Construction founder Sir James Fletcher.
Like several settlements on the peninsula - including Portobello and Macandrew Bay, which lies 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the southwest - Broad Bay is a commuter settlement and a haven for alternative lifestylers. These settlements have a strong arts community, with many of their residents connected in some way with the visual or performing arts.

Maori Heritage

Local Kai Tahu Maori knew the Bay as Whaka Oho Rahi (meaning 'large resource': so a place where food was gathered. Muapoko (Otago Peninsula) has strong Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe and Waitaha connections. Many Hapu (family calans) lived adjacent to the harbour and esturies. They had a hunter gatherer lifestyle, taversing all parts of the Peninsula and waterways.

European Settlers

The first Eurpean resident was John Styles, who took up land here in 1854. The village originally evolved as a farming service settlement. During the 1870s William Larnach used the Bay to land building materials for his famous castle.. The materials were transported up the hill on the Camp Road bridle track (now a walking/mountain bike track).

Holiday Resort

The development of timetabled harbour ferry services in the early 1900s saw Broad Bay become a popular holiday resort. The ferries brought hundreds of day-trippers at a time to watch regattas and to promenande and picnic. During this period many of Dunedin's industrial and professional eleite, including the Speights family of brewing fame, built substancial holiday homes in the village. Since World War 2 Broad Bay has developed as a residential suburb with a high concentration of artists and other creative people.

Fletcher House

Broad Bay played a key role in the career of one of New Zealan's most famous 20th Century industrialists, Sir James Flethcer. In 1908 Fletcher and his business partner gained their first contract to construct a house for a local shopkeeper. This set him on his way to building a vast empire. The house has been restored to its original period and is open to the public. The house is 600 meters from the cache on a heading of 065 true.

Papa spent his early childhood years in Broad Bay living in what was then called Harbour Terrace (now Waikana Street). He remembers coming down to where the cache is located often with his two older brothers, catching butter fish off the jetty and finding octopus under the boat sheds. The lawn areas were not here at that time and it is now a very family friendly area. The jettys out to the boat sheds east of the cache would get very slippery and icy in winter and were not the place to go skating as his eldest brother found out. The large building across the road from the cache was Findlators Store.

The cache is an 200ml Sistema container hidden at ground level and containing the usual goodies, including logbook and pen/pencil. Please place back how you found it.

Note: There is absolutely no need to walk or tramp over any of the agapanthus to find this cache.
