Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden around the Museum of Rocks of Moon and Mars, by Takamatsu no Ike.

Around the GZ, there is a small private museum - many rocks are displayed in two rooms of private house - but there are many rare rocks; rocks of which origin are the moon & the mars. As you know, there are only limited amount of moon rocks brought back by Apollo project in 1960's, and no "sample return" from the mars yet. Only Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa just has succeeded to brought back very small amount of sands from asteroids. Why here? Let's ask Dr. Yauchi Keizo, the owner of this museum.

Dr. Yauchi had been working in Japanese antarctic survey projects in 1970's. He founds there are many meteoric rocks, and brought back many of them (the team gathers over 600 meteoric rocks in a winter, while there're only 2500 meteoric rocs in the world at that age). You can see (even touch!) rare rocks including moon & mars meteoric stones, regolith which forms planets, and many kinds of other rocks of the antarctic. If you are interested in the space or rocks, I suggest you strongly to visit the museum when it is open (basically opens on Sunday 10:00-16:00, contact 019-661-8895).

The cache is hidden in a small park (next to a shrine) at "Takamatsu no Ike" pond. Around there Dr. Yauchi everyday feeds swallows in winter.

キャッシュは高松の池周辺の『月の石・火星の石展示館』付近にあります。

GZ付近にあるこの展示館は、私設の博物館です。多数の石が民家の2部屋に展示してあるだけですが、大変貴重で面白いものがあります。月と火星由来の石です。ご存知のように月の石は1960年代にアポロ計画で限られた量だけが持ち替えられており、火星からの『サンプルリターン』はまだ成功していません。最近日本の探査機『はやぶさ』が小惑星から微粒子を持ち帰るのに成功した事実は記憶に新しいところでしょう。ではなぜここに? 館長である矢内桂三博士にきいてみるとよいでしょう。

矢内博士は日本の南極探検隊で1970年代を中心に南極を数度訪れています。博士は南極には多数隕石があることを発見し、多数持ち帰りました。ある冬には600以上の隕石を持ち帰りましたが、当時は世界中にある隕石は2500程度だった時代です。詳細はこの記事 (秋田魁新報) に紹介されています。 (visit link)

この展示館には、月や火星の隕石、惑星を構成したと考えられるレゴリス、その他貴重な南極の石などが展示されています (触れるものもあります)。岩石や宇宙に興味があったらぜひ、開館時間に合わせて訪れてみてください (原則として日曜の10:00-16:00が開館時間です。必ず019-661-8895に問い合わせてください)。

キャッシュは展示館の近くの、高松の池を望む小さな公園 (神社の隣) に隠してあります。この付近では矢内博士が冬になると白鳥に餌やりをしているそうです。
