Geocache Description:

You can see an ordinary shrine approach at the cache point. Actually, this approach is a part of a ruin of an ancient highway, Kodai Kando.

In 701, under the Taiho Ritsuryo (Taiho Code) regime, a nationwide highway network development project was launched. The purposes are to connect the center and the regions, to make movement of the army and messengers easy and to make transportation of tax products smooth. Therefore, a large scale highway network of almost straight 30-34 feet wide roads which connect the central governmental area, Asuka or Nara, and regional capitals was developed.

However, because a maintenance cost is very expensive and the straight routes were planned without consideration of locations of exiting settelements, it had gradually gone out of use and had abandoned by around 11th century. Even so, there are some places like here where we can identify it as the ancient highway still now.

What is interesting here is the present allotment of land and the city border are still under the influence of the road plan over 1300 years ago.

After finding the cache, we recommend you to visit other waypoints. You can realize the route is really straight.

And also visit another ancient highway at GC1ZCYY.
