Geocache Description:

This should be an easy park and grab on Hwy 138. Bring your own pen. It is a camouflaged waterproof match holder.

This bridge has an interesting history. My father helped build it in 1964, and it was completed in October of that year. Two months later on December 18, it was washed out by the 1964 Christmas Flood. The water, at the high point of the flood, was 10 feet over the current level of the bridge. After the flood, the brand new bridge was on the bottom of the river about 100 feet downstream. That bridge was replaced by a temporary log stringer bridge for several years before the current cement bridge was completed. About 1/4 mile downriver from the bridge, there is a wide area with trees on the river side of the road. There was a tree there that had a large gouge about 10 feet higher than the road where it had been hit by a log. At the peak of the flood, my dad and I measured the speed of a log going down the river, just below Steamboat Inn, at 55 MPH. At Steamboat Inn, we could hear and feel the logs hitting the Steamboat Creek bridge 1/2 mile up river. I don't know how that bridge survived the flood.

There is an interesting article about the flood on Wikipedia at: (visit link)
