Geocache Description:

This cache was placed in honor of my father's 80th birthday on 8/9/2011 in an attempt to convince his many mo'opuni (grandkids) to come visit. The globe-shaped box was placed in Dad's favorite tree at his all-time favorite location on Hawai'i Island (Honu'apo Bay). By the way, there is no space for a pen in this cache so please bring your own!

Honu'apo Bay (aka Whittington Beach Park) is an important region within the heart of the rural Ka'u district (SE Hawai'i). In times of old, the estuary was used as a fishpond to cultivate mullet and moi. In decades past, it was a bustling town center and a hub for the local sugar industry.

Yet in the last decade is has relatively been left alone until a 225-acre parcel was put for sale in 2004. Soon thereafter, a dedicated group of individuals from the community came together to protect the area from the threat of large-scale development. This non-profit organization was given the name, "Ka 'Ohana O Honu'apo" (the Family of Honu'apo). After much hard work and collaboration from around Hawai'i nei and outside it, in 2005 Ka 'Ohana was finally able to secure the funds to purchase the region for the State of Hawai'i.

Today, the park is well maintained by the County of Hawai'i Parks & Recreation Division with a little help and guidance from Ka 'Ohana. Nowadays, Honu'apo is a frequently visited coastal beach park (by local residents, school groups, and visitors alike). The region is home to many natural, cultural and archeological sites. Most days you can see residents using the nearshore coastline to fish, swim, and share time with their 'ohana (family). Honu'apo Park is a marvelous example of how a small group of dedicated individuals came together to do something wonderful for their community.

This cache was placed in honor of my father, RLL. Robin was born on August 9th, 1931 in northern California near San Francisco. In his fun-filled eighty years of life (so far!) he has lived in many places and been involved in many different adventures. In his opinion, the most important of which was raising 9 children, who in turn raised 11 grandkids, and (as of 2011) 2 great grandchildren!!

Robin is a charismatic, charming fellow with a strong personality and sense of humor that will not quit. "Damn I'm Good" is a common phrase that he used to instill a sense of self respect into each of us keiki (kids) and hanai (adopted) family members.... The first attempt to place this cache at a local elementary school in Oregon with several of his grandkids failed (8/2011) so this second (belated) attempt in Hawai'i will hopefully spur some much-needed visits from the rest of our mainland 'ohana (family).
