A 700- year- old venerable yew (Taxus
baccata) grows near there. It was acknowledged as a
natural monument in 1994 due to its age. However, the inhabitans of
Piechowice have already been proud of the tree for more than
hundred years and it has been a popular amongst lovers. It is over
10 m tall, with the trunk circumference of 292 cm. A yew is an
evergreen, long- lived dioecious tree with peeling bark. Seeds are
surrounded by bright red, fleshy and sweet aril eaten by birds,
which at the same time disperse them. Except for aril, the whole
plant is poisinous! The yew wood was formerly used in furniture
making in inlay technique. Generally, the yew is a protected tree,
in Poland since 1423, when it was threatened with extinction
because of using it as a wood for making bows and crossbows.
The nearest specimen of another valuable yew can be
found in Henrykow Lubanski.
