Frentress Family Farmstead Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

iowaPete: It is, with a heavy heart, that I take the final step in the life of a geocache. This cache has received a number of wonderful log entries, and we are grateful to all who took the time to find it. But, the property in which the cache is located is transitioning owners. Time to put this one to bed.

Thanks again to all who enjoyed this find, all who added a favorite point. It is our hope to place a cache in the future that is as satisfying to find as this one.

iowaPete

Geocache Description:

Traditional cache hidden at the invitation of the owners!

Eleazor and Diadamia Frentress migrated from the Carolinas back in the mid-1800's to this area and settled in the vast valley along the Mississippi River. They migrated further north towards Cassville, WI only to be forced back toward the Galena, Illinois area when the Blackhawk Wars broke out. In time the Frentress family settled where the current buildings now stand. Their farms were extensive, upwards of 1200 acres.

Henry Frentress, one of the sons, was a prominent businessman, farmer, politician and inventor. His double diamond barbed wire was patented and manufactured in the late 1800's in Dunleith (today's East Dubuque). It was very popular and was shipped out west to fence the plains.

The Frentress Family Cemetery Park (which ALSO contains a geocache), established in the mid-1990's, is located on 3 acres on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. The cemetery lies approximately 500 yards from the Farmstead.

You're looking for a 35mm film canister. It is devilishly hidden. Have patience and respect the environment surrounding the cache location. You do NOT need to remove the container in order to access the log sheet. This cache is placed at the generosity of the owners. Please hunt daylight hours only. Stealth may be needed here. Practice CITO when litter is present. Please remember to replace the cache EXACTLY as you found it (you don't want it to be too easy for the next cacher after all your hard work, do you?). Again, let me emphasize - replace the cache, and its holder back EXACTLY as you found it. The orientation of the holder should be such that the container is NOT visible at a distance.
Good luck!
