Geocache Description:

Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the City of Pensacola have partnered together to create a geocache tour designed to route residents and visitors to the area’s environmental restoration projects and unique environmental habitats.

Jones Swamp is a 1,300-acre protected watershed acquired for its function in buffering and water quality improvements. Jones Swamp naturally filters stormwater runoff and helps improve the water quality flowing into Jones Creek, Bayou Chico, and Pensacola Bay. It provides habitat to a variety of native plants and wildlife, and features public natural trails that provide recreational opportunities as well as environmental education. The Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve lies between the Perdido Pitcher Plant Prairie Preserve to the west and Bayou Chico to the East in the southwest portion of Escambia County. It is the intent of the County to establish the Southwest County Greenway corridor between Bayou Chico and Perdido Bay consisting of both the Tarkiln Bayou and Jones Swamp preserves as well as key environmental restoration sites such as the Glynn Key and Lexington Terrace stormwater wetland projects. Several key restoration activities have taken place in Jones Swamp including stream restoration and prescribed burning. While walking on the trails, look for both rock and wood structures in the creek which serve to stabilize the creek bed and create deep pools which are part of a healthy, natural creek system.
