A magnetic nano cache container can be found near the riverside
pathway, close to Shatin Sports Ground. On a nice day the riverside
is pretty crowded with people enjoying the nice view, rowers and
various sportively active people (beware of muggles!).
The Shing Mun River is a pretty markant part of the Shatin
landscape. Originating for the peak of Tai Mo Shan at an altitude
of 930, it has the highest source of any Hong Kong River.
The 7 km long and 200m wide channel is running from the Tai Wai
area, through the Shatin town centre to the Tolo Harbour. It has
three main tributaries, namely Tai Wai Nullah, Fo Tan Nullah and
Siu Lek Yuen Nullah.
Although Shing Mun River has been primarily designed for the
drainage of stormwater from Shatin with a catchment area of 37km2,
it is also a popular place for the recreational users such as
rowers, riverside walkers and cyclists to have fun and
enjoyment.
The Shing Mun River had once been heavily polluted from the
indiscriminate discharges from livestock, industrial, commercial
and domestic sources in the 1980s.
The water quality of Shing Mun River has improved from bad to good
in terms of the Water Quality Index since 1993. Lifeforms including
fish and invertebrates have also reappeared in the river.
The Environmental Protection Department of HK has published a
complete website around the history and the actions taken on
pollution problems:
