Lake Kohangatera.
Access to the cache can be by bicycle or on foot from
either Burdan's Gate at Eastbourne or via Baring Head and the East
Harbour Regional Park.
If traveling from Eastbourne, the first part of the trip to the
Pencarrow Lighthouse is approx. 7.5km over fairly flat terrain on
gravel road. From there, there are multiple tracks on which you can
make your way to the Lookout and depending on which of these you
take, the terrain and distance will vary. When I placed the cache,
I came up from the Lake Kohangatera track which gave me a steep
climb (I had to push my mtb) from the Gollans Wetland and a
distance of approx 13-14km.
The trip from the Baring Head end is shorter at approx. 5-6km
and you climb as you cross the farmland prior to dropping back down
to sea level. From there it is fairly flat until you climb to the
lookout via the Lake Kohangatera track.
Further information on the tracks in this area may be obtained
from http://tracks.org.nz/track/show/95 .
Dogs: Please do NOT bring your canine companions
with you on this hunt as they are not permitted in the East Harbour
Regional Park, the Pencarrow Lakes Area or South of the hill track
to the Pencarrow lighthouse.
The Cache is a small xeonic container containing a
logbook, pencil and sharpener and a small treat for the FTF
Please note that during the duck shooting season which runs
from the first Saturday of May to early July, that it is possible
that you may encounter armed and cammoed duck shooters in the lakes
area. While this should not be a problem please use common sense to
prevent putting yourself at any risk.
