This cache can be found at the site of what was once Coxhoe Hall. It can be a single find or as part of a series if you choose to complete the Coxhoe Circular Walk. Either (currently) parking and beginning at 'Coxhoe Blue Lady' or at parking near 'Coxhoe Conkers.' A popular short family/ dog walkers or cycle route. Bring tweezers!!! ;) After the first few finds of this cache - I have increased the difficulty rating to reflect the regular need for extra clues. Goodluck!
Coxhoe Hall was once considered to be one of the finest houses in County Durham. It is famous for being the birth place of poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
It was set high on a south facing hillside adjacent to the site of Coxhoe medieval village. A tree-lined avenue led to the Hall and it was surrounded by grounds with terraces, tennis courts and walled garden.
How do I Love Thee? Let me count the Ways
By Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seem to lose.
With my lost saints, - I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! – and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
1938: The Hall was bought by East Hetton Colliery Co. It was requisitioned in WW2 and housed British troops and Italian and German prisoners of war.
The Hall fell into disrepair and was finally demolished by the National Coal Board in 1956.
