Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the waterfall, a 90 minute uphill hike from Algeria campsite in the Cederberg. Enjoy!

Algeria is so called because a French visitor found the surrounding mountains reminiscent of the Algerian landscape on the north coast of Africa. At less than an hour's drive into the Cederberg from the N7, the camp site is quite popular and Cape Nature is making an effort to keep it in good condition. Generally, the Cederberg region is laden with natural and historical treasures and is worth exploring over the course of a week or two.

Report to the Algeria reception, they should advise you about parking and the route. Take at least 1 liter of water per person and in summer, start early in the morning to avoid getting scorched. The hike is just long enough to make for a great feeling of satisfaction when you reach the waterfall. It is quite a climb, but fit, primary school aged kids should be able to manage, given some encouragement!

If you want more of a challenge, climb another 90 minutes or so to Middelberg Hut. My mother and her family undertook this hike in the early 1970s, accompanied by locals with donkeys that carried the provisions for the night. Back then, leopards still lived in the region and attacked the donkeys at night! Unfortunately, leopards are extremely rare in the Cederberg now. The hut is no longer suitable for overnight stays, but there's a great spot for a lunch picnic by the creek.

While the hike may give you a bit of a workout, the cache itself is in a relatively easy spot. Have a drink from a rapidly flowing part of the river, take some pictures and then have a look around. You do NOT have to go close to any edges!

Initial contents: Log sheet, pencil, emergency sunblock :)

FTF to Carlstein. Well done!
