Farther up Silver Creek there was gold mining from the mid-1840's until well into the 1900's. This cache is not very far up the creek from the Catawba River, however. It requires some walking and bushwhacking that varies according to the season of the year and how you approach the cache. It is not for children without supervision.
The Ozzie in me -- to use an expression that will be lost upon non-Survivor-followers -- tempted me to put the cache in a tree overhanging the creek and call it "Up A Tree Without A Paddle." I didn't, but getting the cache probably will involve getting dirty if not actually wet. Also, the walk to the cache area can be muddy after there has been a good deal of rain.
The cache is a one serving soup thermos. Its hide has been under water twice in the last nine years, so please screw the lid on securely.
It is not really buried, and the main treasure in this cache is the fun(?) of finding it and getting a smiley.
[Note: The cache is not on, in, or near the fenced area around the small Silver Creek power facility, and its better that you don't park there. The area where the cache is will not be busy, but there occasionally may be fishermen, or there may be people farming close by. The area looks "snakey" and you should be careful in the area, particularly in the summer when you may encounter poison oak, briars, etc.
The cache is accessible, theoretically at least, directly from the Morganton Greenway, so any Morganton Greenway parking is good enough if you don't mind walking from wherever you park. You probably will not want to bushwhack down the bank all the way from the Greenway, however, and the closest parking lot is that for the Catawba River Soccer Complex where there are a playground, dog run, restrooms, and picnic facilities.
*******Congratulations and thanks once again to dream chaser for the FTF, who also managed to encounter the only local cop who didn't already know about Geocaching!******
