Geocache Description:

In August 2012 the UK Mega Event is coming to Cartmel in Cumbria. This sunset walk up Orrest Head is one of a varied series of events supporting this Mega Event. It is hosted by Andy (Walker-Clan) supported by other members of the North West Mega Event Team.

2012 UK Mega Event

Although not one of the 214 fells described in Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume series “A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells”, Orrest Head was the first Lake District fell that Wainwright climbed and was the hill that started his love affair with the region.

Orrest Head was later covered in his book “The Outlying Fells of Lakeland”, published eight years after the original series was completed, and his love for the fell is clear for all to see: “Orrest Head, for many of us, is ‘where we came in’ – our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty. It is a popular walk, deservedly, for here the promised land is seen in all its glory.”

As Wainwright himself says, “it is a fitting finale, too”, and so we bring an end to our “Mega Week” of events with a gentle walk to one of the Lake District’s most popular and pleasant beauty spots to watch the sun set over Lake Windermere.

When & Where:

Monday 13th August 2012

Meet at 7:45pm by the footpath start in Windermere town (see additional waypoints below) ready to reach the summit by 8:30pm in time for the 8:46pm sunset.

Details:

This walk is a linear walk up Orrest Head starting from, and returning to Windermere, following the "there and back" route as detailed on pages 26-29 of Wainwright’s “The Outlying Fells of Lakeland”. It is a little under 1½ miles walk with approximately 400ft of ascent. It is not too difficult a walk for anyone who does not mind hills, and easy for an experienced fell walker. Dogs are welcome to come on the walk, but should remain under control at all times.

It must be stressed that everyone partaking in the walk is responsible for their own safety (and that of any children or dogs accompanying them). It is NOT a guided walk, rather a group walking together, where various members know the route being taken. Although the route is following established tracks & paths, some stretches are steep, whilst others are rough under foot.

Orrest Head is only 783ft high, but it is still a Lakeland fell where the weather can change very rapidly. Everyone should be properly prepared for a fell walk by wearing and bringing:
- Walking boots
- Waterproof clothing
- Warm clothing
- Drinks and food
- A map and compass (and know how to use them!)
- A camera (for the excellent views North & West across Lake Windermere towards Troutbeck, Langdale and the main fells of the Lake District, including Scafell Pike and the Old Man of Coniston, which some of you may have climbed earlier in the week).
- It will be dark when we return, so a torch is also essential

Please note that if the weather is particularly bad, we reserve the right to change the walk, or abandon it all together on the grounds of safety.

If you plan to come on this walk, please log a “will attend” indicating the numbers of adults/children in your group.

Please remember to keep visiting the North West Mega website for the latest information on the UK’s 5th Annual Mega Event in 2012.
