How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

You are invited to attend a very merry Christmas party, Ozark Mountain Geocachers (OMG)-style!

This year's Christmas party will be held at McAlister's Deli, which is located at 1711 West Battlefield, Springfield MO 65807.

It will begin at 6:00 PM and be over around 9:00 PM.

I have reserved the party room in the back of the restaurant.

We will eat first and then announce any recent geocaching milestones.

After the usual business, you wil have the opportunity to partake in a game that is known as "Rob Your Neighbor" (but is also known as "Dirty Santa"). The way the game works is this:

  • Anyone who wants to play "Rob Your Neighbor" will bring a WRAPPED (gift bags are okay) gift that is worth between $5 to $10. The gift does not have to be brand-new, but if it isn't, please make sure it is at least "gently used" and family-friendly.
  • The gifts will be placed together on a table, and then anyone who brings a gift will get to draw a random number.
  • Whoever drew #1 will get to pick the first gift. They will unwrap it in front of everyone and then hold on to the gift.
  • Whoever drew #2 goes next. That person can either "rob" the gift from Person #1, or pick another gift and unwrap it.
  • If Person #1 had their gift "robbed" from Person #2, they get to pick another gift to unwrap and then hold on to that gift. They cannot immediately "rob" their gift back. However, if later on in the game the opportunity comes to "rob" a gift back, that is allowable, as long as the gift hasn't been "robbed" more than three times.
  • Person #3 will do the same thing, either "robbing" another gift or choosing to unwrap a new gift.
  • As mentioned above, each gift can only be "robbed" THREE times. After it has been "robbed" a third time, whoever "robbed" it last gets to keep it.
  • After everyone has had the opportunity to "rob" a gift or unwrap a new one, Person #1 will get an opportunity to either keep their gift or "rob" someone else's.

And that's how "Rob Your Neighbor" works! If you are bringing a gift, note that it does NOT have to be geocaching related, but creative cache containers would be good gifts for this game. The game is optional and you don't need to tell me in advance if you are bringing a gift. If you don't bring a gift, feel free to watch the fun!

Ho-ho-hope to see you all there!
