Geocache Description:

Regular cache, small PVC pipe container, located along the Weston-Gauley Bridge Turnpike National Recreation Trail.

The Weston-Gauley Bridge Turnpike National Recreation Trail is a ten mile section of the turnpike owned and managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

In 1849, work began on the Weston & Gauley Bridge Turnpike, which eventually stretched nearly 110 miles through a rugged Appalachian landscape. When completed, the road connected the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike at Weston with the James River & Kanawha Turnpike at Gauley Bridge. It was one of the few north-south turnpikes built in the antebellum period.

There are several parking locations for the trail - none of which are along the beaten path. Caches along the trail may be done in one long hike (two vehicles recommended) or by utilizing the various parking locations. The trail effectively connects Burnsville Lake with Stonewall Jackson Lake.
