We were out running Santa errands and left a present for you!
Texas is a great place for birding in the spring time, but winter
can sometimes even be better. After all, as much as we complain
about the weather in Texas, you have to admit it can be pretty mild
in the wintertime! One of our wintertime wanderers are the hawks.
As we were out placing these caches today, one of these huge birds
was squawking in a field nearby, and this explains the name.
There are 19 different types of hawks recognized as birds of Texas.
The hawk we saw today we haven't identified yet, but we are working
on it. In the winter, the broad winged and Harris hawks are
frequently spotted.
Texas has over 600 species of birds known to inhabit it, more than
any other state of the US. Because of the rich variety of species,
this state is known as a “birders paradise”. The Great
Texas Coastal Birding Trail capitalizes on this, joining together a
system of trails, bird sanctuaries, and nature preserves that
encompasses 308 different sites along the entire Gulf Coast of
Texas. This trail is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Many of
these sites can be accessed in a day trip from the Houston
area.
We’ll be the first to admit we don’t know a whole lot
about birds, but we sure like looking at, and for, them. Especially
birds of prey. Team Four Paw really has an eye for hawks. Let us
know if you see any birds out here. We usually use an app on the
smart phone called iBirdPro, or we go to www.whatbird.com, or we
google images until we find one that matches what we saw that day.
You can use these same tools to identify the birds you might see
out here, or you could go one step further than we have and consult
a handy dandy field manual. Someday we might get one of our
own.
