Geocache Description:

The eighth hide in my SF brewery series.

This cache is located near a modern day brewing company which is regarded as being responsible for the resurgence of microbreweries in the Bay Area post-prohibition. It was born in 1896 when German Brewer Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law, Otto Schinkel, Jr., bought an old brewery on Pacific St. The 1906 earthquake and fire demolished the brewery and a year later it was re-opened at a new location south of Market St. The brewery was closed during the dark days of prohibition from 1920 to 1933. In February of 1934, this building burnt down. It was re-located a few blocks from where the current brewery is. Due to financial hardships, it was closed in 1959. The following year, it was purchased and re-opened. But in the 1965, the owners at the time were seeking to close it once again. Fritz Maytag purchased 51% of the company for a few thousand dollars that year. Bottling began in 1971. At the time they were producing their porter, ipa, barleywine and Christmas ale. In 1977, they moved to their current location on Mariposa St, which was formerly a coffee roastery. In 1979, they began production of steam style beer, which is their most popular selection today. It is the only beer style in the world to have a trademark. Any other brewery that produces it has to call it California common.
