THE AMERICAN LEGION
STRUCK-KLANDRUD POST NO. 336
This American Legion Post is named in honor of
the memory of two young Onalaska men who died
in the First World War. They are Otto Struck, born
in 1888 and died in 1918; and August Klandrud,
born in 1892 and also died in 1918.
The organization was chartered in 1921. Ewart G.
Showers was its first commander.

In the earliest days, the post held its meetings in
the Onalaska High School building located on
Main Street. When the building burned in 1925,
some agreement was apparently made that if the
Legion members would clean up the debris left
from the fire, the land would belong to the post.
What exactly transpired is not known. The lot was
vacant for a number of years and was used as the
site for the Legion carnivals, a playground and
skating rink. Due to lack of any written agreement,
the city has maintained and owned the land. (The
City Hall and Fire Station is now built on the site).
Apparently the club met at various locations for the
next few years.
On December 21, 1948, the post authorized the
issuance of bonds for a building program for its
own clubrooms. On January 17, 1949, the bond is-
sue was passed unanimously and plans began im-
mediately.
The site for the proposed building was at 209 Ir-
vine Street. Labor and equipment for the excava-
tion work was donated by I.H. Pertzsch. Mr.
Pertzsch was named honor member of the post in
1951 for this donation.
Work began in April of 1949. Lee Bros. of Ona-
laska made the bid that was accepted to complete
the basement at a cost of $1,025.00.
The first meeting in the basement facility, offer-
ing only temporary heating facilities, was held on
March 13, 1950. Reroofing and painting bees were
held in the early '50's and in July of 1953 a build-
ing permit to complete the building was issued. In
May of 1954, the building committee obtained a
loan from George Horman in the amount of
$5,000.00 at 4 percent interest to complete the pro-
ject.
About eleven years after the first money was
paid for the clubrooms building project, a mortgage
burning celebration was held on August 29, 1960.
During the 1970's the Legion purchased land in
Sand Lake Coulee. The land was at first used for a
ball field and carnival site with plans to build a
new clubroom. The first building consisted of a
roof over a dirt floor, but improvements continued
during the 70's.
Presently~ the nine-acre site at 731 Sand Lake
Road consists of a soft-ball field, a 5,500 square foot
building and a 50-car paved parking lot., the. Flags
are donated to school and scout groups, and var-
ious other youth in Government programs are
sponsored. Perhaps most significant of the Post's
programs is the annual Memorial Day Program
held at the cemetery, which includes Roll Call, De-
coration of the Graves and Salute to the Dead Vet-
erans.
In 1984 the post had about 415 members that met
to enjoy the comraderie of veterans for which the
organization was originally intended, and also to
support the many youth and community projects
