The unusual name is what the Sahaptin Indians where reported to have called the site. We call it the Redmond Caves or Airport Caves. A 100-foot thick layer of basalt from the Newberry Crater covers the area. A partially collaspsed lava tube forms several caves, one of which is about 60 feet wide and 20 feet high.
Many small artifacts (arrowheads, awls, fishhooks, beads, tools) were recovered here and, before being disturbed by settlers, the caves were home to bats and false scorpions. The City of Redmond and BLM have plans for a future park and interpretive area.
The cache is an ammo can. You don't need to move any rocks. Please rehide so it is not easily seen by accident. If you are so inclined bring gloves & a trash bag and do a little clean-up -- every bit helps!
