Tuuli Puspus Pa Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bigeddy: Pulled it so as not to interfere with restoration work in the area. In the 18-month run of this cache it was signed by 107 visitors. On the webpage there were 95 finds recorded and 8 no-finds. There were many reports of not knowing the caves were here and outrage about the vandalism. Maybe we will get a maintained park in a few years. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

Look for a small (40 acre) BLM site in the SE part of Redmond near the airport, just a few minutes off Hwy 97. There is a dirt road into the site (N 44° 14.845' W 121° 10.666'). There are caves, rock formations and native juniper. The cache is outside the caves. The surrounding area is private property so stay on the site. This is also an archilogical site so tread more lightly than past visitors--and be careful of broken glass and garbage; this might not be a good location for children.

The unusual name is what the Sahaptin Indians where reported to have called the site. We call it the Redmond Caves or Airport Caves. A 100-foot thick layer of basalt from the Newberry Crater covers the area. A partially collaspsed lava tube forms several caves, one of which is about 60 feet wide and 20 feet high.

Many small artifacts (arrowheads, awls, fishhooks, beads, tools) were recovered here and, before being disturbed by settlers, the caves were home to bats and false scorpions. The City of Redmond and BLM have plans for a future park and interpretive area.

The cache is an ammo can. You don't need to move any rocks. Please rehide so it is not easily seen by accident. If you are so inclined bring gloves & a trash bag and do a little clean-up -- every bit helps!
