When you arrive at this cache, you’ll be standing in
excellent habitat for salamanders. If you look through the shrubs
you may notice some colorful, plastic flagging hanging from several
branches. These make a transect, or a line followed through habitat
to conduct a scientific study.
The staff of the Morris County Park Commission are currently
conducting surveys along this transect to identify what amphibians
and reptiles (or “herps”) are found in this area
currently.
The quality and health of the habitat as a whole and the
presence of these “indicator” species correlate
closely, and can help us make conservation and management
decisions.
Will you see a salamander when you find the cache? It’s
unlikely for several reasons. Find out what they are inside the
cache!
Please remember to stay on the marked trails as you navigate to
the cache. You are in sensitive wildlife habitat! Maps are
available in the Visitors Center or at the parking lot
kiosk.
NNJC is about promoting a quality caching experience in
Northern New Jersey.
