Geocache Description:

This cache is the spiritual successor to A Long Walk For A Nano, although Bifrost was also an influence. You can do it the hard way, or the other hard way.

The published coordinates are the start of a short (100m) track that links Katoomba and Leura. If you come in from the Leura side, the start of the track looks a bit like you are walking down a private driveway but in fact this is a signposted and publicly accessible path. Somewhere along this track there is a well camouflaged bison tube. If you are feeling lucky, you could just park near the trailhead, and start looking. If you reach Hope street (on the other end of the track), you have gone too far.

The cache is within 1M (horizontal distance) of the formed track, and you do not need to dislodge any rocks, ferns, or moss, to find this cache. Please leave no trace of your visit to this lovely little glen! Except for your signature in the log of course.

If you want to get some more accurate coordinates (my Etrex claimed 1.5M accuracy after averaging), you can travel another lovely walk that also links Katoomba and Leura, although this one is a little longer.

If you are reasonably fit, Echo Point is not too crowded, and you don't stop for too many photo/refreshment breaks on the way, you can do this hike in 90 minutes, if you want to take it easy, allow 3 hours . The track is well marked (although sometimes muddy), with lots of hand rails and safety fences. I have rated the terrain as '4' purely because of the number of stairs involved.

To start, make your way to Echo Point (at the southern end of Katoomba Street), from which you follow the signposted track South/West down past the Three Sisters to the start of the Giant Stairway. This part of the track can get very crowded, but most people only go as far as the first sister, whereas you will be continuing all the way to the bottom.

The Giant Stairway

When you do get to the bottom, look for the NPWS info sign that is titled "The Giant Stairway".

In the first paragraph, there is a 3 digit number starting with '4'. Call the second digit in that number 'A'.

The second paragraph starts "The climb up...". How many words are there after the word "exhausting" to the end of the sentence? Call this 'B'

Look at the map on the sign, and 1KM north of the arrow marked 'YOU ARE HERE' you will see a spot marked 'Leura Forest', where the Dardanelles Pass and Federal Pass meet. This is your next destination.

Leura Forest

This is an excellent place to stop and have some lunch. While you are there, look for the NPWS info sign labelled "Leura Forest". On that sign there is 4 digit number followed by the words 'Railway Guide Map'. Call the third digit (from the left) in that number "C".

You will leave by The Federal Pass track, heading NNE. You will see "Fern Bower" is only 750M away, although what the sign doesn't say is a lot of that path is vertical!. There are plenty of shady places to sit and rest though, and lots of waterfalls to photograph, so take your time.

You may see some old / unsignposted tracks on the ascent, which you should ignore. You will eventually come up some steep metal stairs to T-junction, with one path labelled 'Amphitheatre Track", and the other 'Federal Pass'. Stay on the Federal Pass.

Fern Bower

Finally you will come to Fern Bower. There is another waterfall here. If you get to a point where a giant tree has fallen over and is blocking the stairs you have gone about 20 metres too far, so turn around and find the NPWS info sign. On the sign, you will see the names of different species of animals that may be found in the area. How many species of Possums are listed? Call the answer 'D'.

Final Ascent

From Fern Bower, keep following the path up until you reach a T-junction with Prince Henry Cliff Walk. If you head in the direction labelled 'Leura Cascades' you will shortly pop out on Cliff Drive, right near the Solitary restaurant/kiosk.

GZ

The cache is at S 33° 43.0AB E 150° 19.1DC .
Once again, The cache is within 1M (horizontal distance) of the formed track, and you do not need to dislodge any rocks, ferns, or moss, to find this cache.

Please don't diminish the valor of the cache by sharing the final coordinates with anyone who hasn't made the trek down to Leura Forest.

I have posted some photos to help you navigate. Additional hints for the final location available on request. Good luck and happy hunting!

Extra Hint

Somewhere between Leura Forest and Fern Bower you will pass an NPWS info sign labelled "Federal Pass"that includes the cost (a 6 digit number) of works undertaken between 1997 & 1998. Take the second digit from the left, and call that 'E'. Somewhere on the track containing GZ, there is a bridge called "The Apprentices Bridge" on which are plaques with the names of the people involved in it's construction. Find the number of stonemason apprentices whose surname starts with 'G', and call that number 'F'.

The equation (E-F)/2 will give you the approximate vertical displacement in metres of the cache from the track (a +ve number is above the track, -ve means below the track).

Congratulations to Kendie16 for the first find
