Geocache Description:

Quick park and grab. Back road offers ample shoulder to park on.

Like a virtual cache a few miles down the road, the monument here marks the site of the 'great carry', where a 4-ton rope was carried from the location of the Battle of the Big Sandy, along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, to Sackets Harbor. It was to be used for the large American frigate being built for the War of 1812. This ship had 26 forty-two pounders, 30 thirty-two pounders, 2 twenty-four pounders, had a tonnage of 1,580 and a crew of 500 officers and men. This ship was launched in May, 1814. After the war ended, she was sold around 1824.
