People started mining in the area in the 6th century BC. The silver that was mined helped the Athenian Democracy become wealthy and strong but also Greece to become able to defend against the Persians. Four centuries later mining activity stopped until 1864, when Giovani Baptista Serpieri founded the French Company and started mining in the area again. Mining in Lavreotiki came to an end eventually in 1973.
Christiana tunnel - or Paron tunnel - was one of the mining tunnels in the area. It was named after Serpieri's daughter. The cache, a film canister, is placed outside the tunnel.
You can go inside the tunnel at your own risk and try to understand the feeling of working in the dark and breathing poisonous fumes. Miners didn't live longer than 35 years!
You need a strong flashlight and some courage. The access is possible for about 60 meters, then it becomes difficult and dangerous due to fallen parts. So don't continue beyond this point. It's an interesting visit though, because you can see the smaller ancient tunnels, water dripping and wells used to bring mining material to the surface.
Η κεκλιμένη μεταλλευτική στοά «Παρών», μήκους 450 μέτρων, κατασκευάστηκε από τη Γαλλική Μεταλλευτική Εταιρεία του Λαυρίου στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα και δραστηριοποιήθηκε μέχρι το 1973.
Ήταν η κύρια είσοδος των εργαζομένων στο ευρύτερο μεταλλευτικό τομέα της Καμάριζας, το μεγαλύτερο μεταλλευτικό κέντρο του Λαυρίου. Η στοά είναι σε καλή κατάσταση και μπορείτε να την επισκεφθείτε με οδηγό και με τον κατάλληλο εξοπλισμό.
Μπροστά από την είσοδο της στοάς, μπορεί κανείς να δει το κτίριο του επιστάτη και τις δύο θέσεις φρουράς, όπου πραγματοποιείτο ο έλεγχος της εισόδου και εξόδου των μεταλλωρύχων. Το όνομα «Παρών» προέρχεται από αυτήν του τη χρήση (ότι κάποιος δηλώνει παρών).
