Geocache Description:

The first of what we hope will be a series around Latchingdon.

Like Italy's bocce and Provencal's petanque, lawn bowling is thought to originate from a game played by Roman soldiers, in which stones were tossed toward a target stone with the object of getting as close to the target as possible. Roman legions introduced the game to countries throughout their empire.

Over time, the stones were replaced by balls that were usually rolled, rather than thrown. In France, the sport became known as boules, from the Latin word for ball, and the English world "bowl" came from that French root.

When winter comes around, Bowls like many outdoor games, becomes less easy to play. So indoor variations of the game have come into existence. Indoor Bowls is simply the indoor incarnation of Lawn Bowls, played on strips of simulation green which are a similar length to Lawn Bowls rinks. There are subtle differences to the rules but ostensibly it's the same game.

From the parking area head along the road until you see the footpath sign at the corner. There is a stile to cross here.

PLEASE NOTE - When you reach the field the footpath markers here are on the broken fence to be found lying on the ground... So it is not at all clear in which direction the two paths go from here - please refer to a map if you are going to continue your walk across the field on the footpath, however if you head across the field towards the farm you will be broadly on the right path.
Although the footpath you need goes directly across the field I suggest you stick to the field edge to get to the cache until the footpath is better marked.
You do not need to enter the wooded area to retrieve the cache; the trees meet the footpath/field edge here.
