The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by
many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of
paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have
‘walked’ before
us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities
across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The
cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries,
tombstones and local lore.
There are well over 200 interments here. Burial dates range from
1862 to 2011, allegedly, one grave dates back to 1846, but this
seems to be an unlikely outlier. Members of the Brown, Buck,
Bullen, Bullion, Copeland, Duncan, Dykes, Vickers, Whitehead, and
Williams families have been laid to rest here, among many
others.
The site should be accessible. There is a closed but
unlocked gate, beyond which a lane leads a few hundred feet to the
actual grounds. There may be one or two more gates along the way,
but I did not get that far, as I arrived late. A sign by the road
politely encourages idlers and ne'er-do-wells to steer clear, so if
you feel that geocaching does not fall within the realm of
"legitimate cemetery business", then you should proceed no further.
Nor do you have to, as the cache is concealed outside the gate. At
any rate, as always, any refinements to the listed coordinates are
welcomed.
