Geocache Description:

Welcome to Woodville Cemetery. Other names for this cemetery have been Union Cemetery or Gold Hill Cemetery.

This cemetery and the adjacent old Woodville Catholic Cemetery are maintained by Woodville Township Trustees. Most of the stones in this part of the cemetery have been affected by air pollution or weather but some are still legible.

In 1872, I.K. Seaman and his wife sold 2 acres of ground to the Trustees of the Woodville Cemetery. The grounds now contains 12 acres. The Amos Wood family had a burial plot nearby and in 1875, the descendants of Amos Wood turned the family burial ground over to the Woodville Cemetery.

In 1872, Stephen Brown sold 2 acres to the cemetery association and in 1876, he sold another 2 ½ acres to them.

In 1896, George Hagedorn plotted out a piece of ground on the northeast side of the old Woodville Cemetery and named in Gold Hill. In 1939, it was turned over to the Woodville Cemetery Association.

Prior to 1920, George Thomas, a Toledo businessman put money up to build the mausoleum. He was only able to sell about two dozen crypts. Due to deterioration of the building, the bodies were removed in 1997 and placed in caskets and individual vaults and interred in the Gold Hill section of the cemetery in a mass grave.

In 1982, the trustees agreed to accept the responsibility and care of the adjacent Woodville Catholic Cemetery from the Bishop of the Toledo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. That section of the cemetery is no longer used.
