Geocache Description:

Welcome to Smith Cemetery. This cemetery is cared for by Jackson Township Trustees.

On page 54 of L. Lillian Wise’s “A History of Jackson Township, Sandusky County, Ohio” she relates this story:

“it is in connection with Michael Long and his wife that the first grave was made in Smith Cemetery. Their first child, a girl, not many months old, died and their must be a burial place……..The rains had made travel well nigh impossible so a small group of men with Michael Long riding ahead on horseback with the small coffin cradled in his arms made the sad journey to the resting place. The small child is buried in the southeast part of the cemetery with a soldier resting on either side…. In not far from the road.” Reverend Michael Long came to Sandusky County in 1834. He was a minister of the United Brethren Church.

On March 9, 1859 Samuel and Elizabeth Smith sold to Jacob Winters and David Snyder, trustees of Jackson Township, a parcel of land “that is now enclosed as a burying ground” for $7.00. In 1874, the Smith’s again deeded land to the trustees for an addition to the cemetery.

In 1875, Daniel and Catherine Warner deeded a strip of land next to the cemetery for a hitching area.

In 1895, Elizabeth Smith & Samuel Smith Jr. & wife Mary deeded land to the trustees.

In 1907, the township trustees deeded the cemetery property to the Smith Cemetery Association of $1.00. April 13, 1955 saw the transfer of the cemetery back to the township trustees from the association.
