Geocache Description:

Hike thru the Wanna Go "back door"
on an easy 2 mile round trip to a picnic Event.
Scuttlebutt has it there could a dozen or so geocachers with over nine years caching history, with half of them having over ten years in this great hobby will be in attendance.

A bring your own picnic, on a mountain hike.
The Wanna go crew will meet at the top of Springer Mountain for a picnic at 12 noon on Wednesday April 11, 2012. You may schedule your own departure time from the parking area, hike at your own pace to arrive any time before noon. We will be enjoying fellowship before the picnic and adjourn after lunch.
The one mile climb is not steep but is steady.
trail profile

The trick is you have to navigate USFS gravel roads for many miles beforehand to get to the Wanna Go Picnic parking area. Allow plenty of travel time!

trail head

I believe any family car will make the trip to the parking lot.

Just pack what supplies, plus food and drink that you need for a one mile hike up a mountain, and then lunch. If you bring too many brownies, I will help you pack them back to the car!

If you are one of the chosen few that wanna answer the call of the wild, and follow the typical approach trail to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail on Springer Mountain, you will find yourself hiking an arduous 8+ miles from Amicalola Falls State Park.

If you choose this route, I would suggest camping on Springer.
Just north of the summit, there is a spur path to the right (east) to a camping area, lean-to shelter, and a privy. But you may camp even if you use the back door. If weather permits, and the creeks don't rise you may be able to find a Lacy or two camping there the night before the event.(Tuesday 4/10/12)

Our back door hike will begin across the gravel road from the parking area (N 34° 38.264 W 084° 11.710). The trail follows the white blazed Appalachian Trail.

The path climbs 400 plus feet over the one mile hike to the summit.
We will return along the same route.
